Separate and equal: Joe (left) and Jacob in a rare moment of rapprochement. They're both "proud" geldings, meaning that even though they have been geldings for years, they think they're stallions. Jacob is older and feebler than Joe, and if Joe got in there, he would surely drive Jacob away from his two mares, Sarah Beth and Ginny. It would break Jacob's heart. So Joe has Bonny and Lena, and each feels successfully studly.
OMG! Oct. 18, 2011: the Le Grand 4-H Club just presented us with $414! The money came from a recycling project. The kids wanted to donate it to a no-kill shelter, and we're the lucky sanctuary! We hope a picture of these big-hearted kids is forthcoming. Wow! and Thank You!
Date changed for upcoming open house: last year the weather played us for fools--the weather said snow; we postponed to rain date; it didn't snow; people were confused; we were confounded! We think we're going to adopt a rain-or-shine policy of the Saturday after Valentine's Day, which will be Feb. 18 this year. The theme this year is Horses in War. Save the date and come prepared to meet your Valentine! Throw an umbrella in the car too. If you've never attended before, give us a call or send a note to receive a card with a map!
Sponsor a pony or horse! We are now inviting donors to choose one special equine to sponsor. Sponsors receive an 8x10 photo, a thank-you note and a Christmas letter from
the chosen one. See the Sponsor Us! page to make your choice.
Let the blog begin: first entry, Nov. 25. Please click Ponyin' Around to see it. Comments are welcome.
Courthouse Christmas tree up: every year we join in the festivities at the Merced County Courthouse Museum with a tree decorated to display photos of our equine citizens, and as many little horsekeeping accoutrements as we can come up with, all in miniature: apples, sugar cubes, hay bales, snaffle bits, tractors. Soon to be added: carrots and buckets.
Santa drives a Corvette! On Jan. 7, members of the Yosemite Corvette Club of Merced arrived with a load of wonderful grass hay and a very generous donation! It couldn't have been more timely; what with Jacob and now Lena's vet bills, we don't know how we would have managed. Their generosity was literally a life-saver!
Open house preparations are ramping up! We're preparing the exhibits, calling for silent auction donations and samples from caterers (all tax-deductible), compiling gratuitous educational content for the contests,
pruning heavy, pendulous branches from an oak tree, and sending out invitations. To receive yours, please call us at 209-742-6808 and leave your name and mailing address very clearly. And we'll be keeping our fingers crossed for decent weather Feb. 18, because it's rain or shine this year!
